The Cheat (1915) was directed by Cecil B. DeMille for Paramount Pictures, and stars Fannie Ward and Sessue Hayakawa (noted as the screen’s first Japanese American film star). The film originally met with protest from Japanese Americans for the sinister portrayal of Hayakawa’s character, who, in subsequent releases, was described as “Burmese.”
